Tired..
It's been a busy weekend!
Aside from seeing experimental bands (good), fixing up the house a bit (locks), seeing a movie (bad) and Dorkbot (interesting), I also had a desire to go... on an adventure on Saturday. So I found a couple of fellow adventurers, and we piled into the Subaru (dirty) and drove off into the hinterlands of Victoria (dusty).

Two hours later, and a long incredibly twisty and hilly track, and we emerged into the Freedom of Movement doof.

(More pics either side of that one in the Flickr photostream.)

Also, stars!
Freedom of Movement party

The party was fun. I'm a bit sorry I ditched going to see people at the CyberFearNoise club thing at MyAeon, but really, I wanted to go on an adventure, not just another bar!
Danced and bounced around, chatted to people around the campfire.. then at 3am decided it was time to embark on the long journey home.
Overall, good weekend! In hindsight, should have taken a tent and camped out at the party.. ah well, next time!

Note.. these are also just about the first pics I've uploaded from the D700.
Not exactly typical conditions (ie. long night exposures) but it was handling it rather well.
I'm also happy that so far my lenses seem to be doing well on the FX sensor.. I was worried the budget Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 would turn out badly, even though it works well on the D200, but no - it's still sharp and free of colour fringes. Yay!
The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 isn't doing so well, but then, it's specifically designated as only being for the reduced DX sensor sizes.. so the fact it works at all (eg. in the shot with the stars above) is probably a bonus :)

Tall gums pale in mist
Full moon through branches
Dance underneath

Diaspora

(Actually - that photo does absolutely no justice to the stunning scene.. Near the banks of the Latrobe River, at midnight the mist has descended to absolutely surround us - and the tall, pale gum tree trunks disappear into the mist, just beyond the edges of the dancefloor. The full moon is just visible through the mist and the branches overhead.)

Right, my hangover & I are heading off to Norfolk.
Back in time for Monday!

By the way, the point-and-shoot Fuji F20 does seem to live up to its reputation as being a good pub camera. (It also lives up to its reputation of consistently over-exposing just about everything. Set it to -.6 of a stop in exposure compensation, kids.)

eg. This turned out reasonably well:
Wha..?

I've uploaded some pics from James and Avalon's party..
I think I said I wasn't planning on uploading them, but actually some turned out quite well.

These were all taken using a recently-acquired late-1970s Nikkor 85mm f/2.0 lens. I like my old manual focus lenses, and old primes are often fast enough to use without flash, such as is the case with these. It's a tiny bit soft wide open, but for portraits that's often a nice effect. (f/2.8 and up is quite reasonable-to-sharp.)

Apologies if anyone doesn't want their picture up there - just yell and I'll take it down!

So, the weekend was good, albeit tiring.
I think I already wrote about Synthetic Culture.. Expensive crap drinks, cheesy music, but good company.
It seems like an awful lot of money to spend, just to drink over carbonated Stella and sit on astroturf with cigerette burns.
Ho hum.

Saturday night was much nicer; We treked out to Walthamstow Marshes, past an "Advanced Water treatment" plant, and finally at the end of the road, came to a park, in the middle of which was the OCB party in full swing.
Quite a large crowd, who were friendly enough, but noticeably different from the sort who frequent the more trancey outdoor doofs. Ran into Kira and co there, who I haven't seen in a very long time. Music was meant to be varied, but ended up seeming like non-stop house and tech-house, which isn't my favourite. Oh well.
Was nice to sit around with friends in a nice location; and thanks to James and Alex for bringing along some nice Pinot Noir :)

Didn't get up to too much on Sunday.. slept away a lot of the day, then finally dropped into the Alwyne that evening with Kate and Michelle for a couple of Frambozenbiers and some food.

I think I'm going to try and have a quiet weekend next week.. although Venetian Snares are playing on friday..

Weekend started by visiting the Finsbury Park Green Fair, which was quite different to how I expected. It had four music areas, and lots of stalls selling food and booze, and a significant hoard of punks.

I hung around there with Carrie and some psyforum folks for a while, then headed home to get ready for the main event of the weekend - the Misztified outdoor party.

Grabbed rental car, people turned up, and drove down to the location, in Surrey. As with such parties, getting there was an adventure. At one point my GPS cunningly directed us down a shortcut that turned out to be an unmarked dirt track through the forest. A road it was, but after a while of close-calls and nearly either bogging or ramping the car in ditches, we came to a bit we just couldn't pass, and turned around and went back, and around the long way.

The party itself was nice; not a huge crowd there, but friendly, and nice music, and gorgeous lakeside forest location.

Headed home in the morning, crashed out to sleep for a while after returning the car, then I headed over to Hampstead Heath for Poggs' picnic.. Then finally home again, for a much-needed early night!

Saturday morning, [livejournal.com profile] lusciousa and I went to the Araki exhibition at the Barbican. We arrived way too late to meet [livejournal.com profile] latexiron and the others there, but anyway.. I had not realised the depth and breadth of Araki's work, and came away feeling amazed. More so than with the Diane Arbus exhibition, I have a craving to take photos and attempt to create art.
Now that I have more options for unnatural lighting, with the wireless flashgun, I'm hoping I'll have more opportunities to do so during winter.

Carrie & I set the world speed record for consuming Wagamama's food, then I went home to pack, and headed up to Cambridge on the bike. (Which is now starting fine, after the major service.)

This was not without drama though - as an accident occured up the road from me, and then the car involved caught fire, and as the glass and tyres blew out, people in cars were franticly trying to reverse up.. Eventually the police and fire crews arrived.. put it out.. took photos.. eventually moved it aside.. cleaned the road.. took statements.. etc etc.. meanwhile I'm standing by the side of the road in the cold and dark. Meh.

Eventually we were allowed to move on, and I arrived in Cambridge quite late; well after 8pm I think?
[livejournal.com profile] robinbloke's party was great - You'd never believe he was a penguin in disguise!

Crashed out at [livejournal.com profile] feanelwa's place afterwards (where I'd left the bike), had lovely lunch at Indigo in Cambridge on Sunday, then I cruised back to London before the light faded. No drama this time, so the journey didn't take much more than an hour, although it was cold on the road. I need to buy a balaclava. (Balaklava?)

Good weekend. And I'm particularly glad that the bike seems to be back to its good old reliable self, even in near-zero temperatures.
