I see my old near-neighbour, the Hackney Mole-man is in the news again.

I just wish someone could get the crazy guy to make sense long enough to find out why he did it..

Allegedly...

They found a sign underneath the house "You are in a twisty turny maze of passages, all alike."

Did he in fact tunnel under the neighbours? Or did he just tunnel enough under his own property to endanger the nearby houses and roads.

No, he tunnelled further, beyond his own property.

Ah yes, I saw that story yesterday and thought of you. :)

I read that the house is held up by household appliances, which also sounds curious.

I'm beginning to wish I'd broken in (after he was evicted) in order to have a look now!

Did you ever meet the guy? I remember realizing that he lived really close to you when I first read the story..

I never met him - he seemed like quite a recluse. I did receive mail for him occasionally, since the postmen didn't seem to know what to do with it.. and so in long-standing Royal Mail tradition, they just randomly stuffed it into nearby houses.

At first I used to think the house was abandoned, until I saw it had power at night.. then I just thought it was squatters. I heard rumours that there was a crazy guy living there, mainly underground, I dismissed them as just silly rumours for a long time.

Maybe he's a really, *really* devout JtHM fan? That always inspired me to dig massive, winding tunnelicious basements and caverns beneath my house.

But then I rationalised that since I knew very little about tunnelling and, indeed, building in general, that I would probably just cause the house above me to collapse.

And I was 15 at the time.

Loony?

Perhaps he is not intellectually in-tune enough for them to figure out his looniness? I remember the intellectually disabled girl with a pseudo-eating disorder who had a fixation with vacuum cleaners- she collected all the cleaning gear in the hospital she could get her hands on and hid it in wardrobes! Apparently at home she had oodles of them that she got from hard rubbish days! And she was only about 17 at that stage... Wondrous are the workings of the wheelbarrow...

Gothic

That house looked almost gothic in its ruinedness....but the land value would still be high!
