Ooh, if you're EH and ever up near Yorkshire, try and go visit Fountain's Abbey. It's an absolutely beautiful ruined abbey with pretty grounds and a couple of lakes, and there's a lovely Turner painting of part of the abbey at sunset in the National Gallery.

Does get rather busy and full of families with small children in the summer though.

does sound lovely though - it might be worth me subscribing to EH as well - although first i should really try and get a little bit of value out of the NT one..

Great - I think I know the Turner painting you are talking about... Maybe he had some scetches of it in the Tate Britain aswell. Have done most of EH around London and the ones in Bath, Canterbury and Cambridge so far... Eltham Palace is my favourite of the ones around here.

It might well be Tate Britain - I can never remember which of the two has all the Turner's.

I've been wanting to go to Eltham Palace for ages but not made it yet :(

Well, not much to keep you from doing it, only a busride from Lewisham... Pictures are here http://trencavel.livejournal.com/68326.html#cutid1

knoll house is near ightham mote iirc, and worth a visit if you're an NT member.

I personally prefer leith hill to box hill - you park about halfway up and then walk through the woods up to a tower at the top of the hill

also, winkworth arboretum in west sussex is beautiful, esp in the autumn.

there's also polesden lacey, but that's a bit so-so, and theres a really nice NT house and gardens down near chichester who's name I can't remember off the top of my head.

Are you just looking at NT places? Cos theres quite a lot of beautiful English Heritage sites around - though they tend to be ruins rather than stately homes.

I can also recommend some beautiful places to visit around Yorkshire way, both NT and EH, if you're ever up there.

I've been to Box Hill, but not Leith Hill.. perhaps I'll have to check it out too!

Also, ruins are good :)
