I just bought a Sigma EX 70-200mm f2.8 APO for £450 (bargain on ebay, street price is about 100 quid more). The budget didn't quite stretch to the DG (digital grade) version but it is still very nice. The f2.8 is all the way through the zoom range, the AF is nice and fast and the image quality is superb. Weighs a ton, though, I need stronger wrists (stop sniggering).
