Hmm. My work has organised their xmas party for the 9th of December.
The theme has been set as "Conrad Bartelski meets Mary Shelley. Think about it. Bring your own snow."

Some googling reveals that Conrad Bartelski is a British downhill skier, who appears to be more well known for supporting a court decision to jail a dangerous skier, than for his actual skiing.

This doesn't help me AT ALL.

Suggestions?

Hmm. I just received some spam from Lastminute.com, advertising loans.
This is more interesting that it would appear at first, because the email address they sent the spam to is a unique email address I have only ever used when submitting information to a different website.

This implies that either
a) The other website sold my info to lastminute.com for spam purposes, against my wishes.
b) Lastminute.com somehow obtained my address from the other website without the other website's permission.

Now, either way, something bad has happened.

By the way, I know some people work for Lastminute.com - what's their policy on sending unsolicited email to harvested email addresses, anyway?

Given that I have very definately never given them permission to send me spam, can I sue them anyway, or will I have to determine which website breached their data collection/retention policy, and then sue them for that instead?

Score!
Lastminute.com (or at least their loans arm) send their email through a third-party bulk-email company, Xpedite.
I had cc:ed them on a complaint email sent to lastminute.com. Lastminute.com merely sent me back an automated message "thanks for your enquiry, please try our online help pages", but Xpedite just got back to me with a human response, in which they said..

Hello Toby;
I need to apologize for the actions of this company. I have issued a block on this customer, (they may not send again using our system). It appears that this company has violated their contractual agreement with Xpedite, and may be subject to legal action. Xpedite is the delivery agent for the message, and has no responsibility for the content. I have canceled their current job and disabled all links to our system (with the exception of the remove link). The actions by this customer were clear in their intent to circumvent the CAN SPAM ACt in the US and the Data Protection Act.
Once again, please accept my sincere apologies.

If this is true, then Lastminute.com and/or their loans division just got themselves into a little bit of hot water.

I hope this sends a strong message out that YOU MUST NOT SPAM!

Just thought I'd make a vague update..
I was feeling kinda crappy on wednesday, but woke up on thursday feeling really nasty.. sore throat and a nasty headache. Not the end of the world, but yeah.. took it easy that day anyway. Headed to the Dovetail for Joel's leaving work drinks, and saw Aden and Michelle who I haven't seen in ages, but apparently have just moved to Highgate, so i might see them more often now they're not living a long way south-west of the River.
I was feeling semi-ok, so had a half of leffe, and then promptly felt teeth-grindingly nasty again. Apologies for not hanging around too long or being very social, either there or at the other pub meet I dropped into on the way home.

There's a pub crawl tonight, but i'm afraid I really don't think I'll make it. Following on from that there's a hardcore night at electrowerkz called Dissonant, which I'd really like to go to, but obviously this will depend entirely on whether my head thinks that extremely loud distorted ragged beats pounding my skull is a good idea or not. This is shite, because it's the first night in quite some time where I've really felt like I'm excited and interested in going, yet i'm run down just enough that it might not work for me.
