Brief update
Oct. 2nd, 2007 07:30 pmI made it to Melbourne fine. The hotel reception didn't blink when I took up lots of bags and boxes, but they blinked when the first PC when thru.. and did comment that they'd never seen that before when the PC server went up! Shane was kind enough to store my amp and VAF speakers, which is good as I think I'd get a hernia trying to manhandle them up to the hotel room. (I can barely lift them one at a time, I think they're about 30kg each. Mind you, with those and a 200W amp I'd probably put on a pretty good party in the hotel room if I wanted! Heh)
Speaking of hotel rooms - this one is pretty swish! It has a miniature kitchen with an oven, 4 hot-plates, toaster, kettle, etc. and a dishwasher and mashing machine. How neat is that? I'm so glad I'm not paying for it, because I hate to think what it costs per night. Mind you, the view sucks - it looks out over a nasty alley full of derelict warehouses and broken glass.
The internet via the hotel was going to be stupid-expensive, so I've rigged my mobile phone up to act as a modem. It's a Windows Mobile (*spew*) device, so naturally I assumed it'd be easier to set it up with Windows.. but I couldn't get it to work at all, however, in MacOS X it was really easy. (Is that irony?)
Unfortunately there isn't much else to do in the hotel room here, apart from the surf the internet, so I hate to think what my mobile phone bill is going to look like in a couple of weeks.. I just signed up for the biggest data plan I could, but because it's pro-rated to my billing cycle, I'll only get about 900 Mb over two weeks. (Uh, does anyone know how much data one uses in a typical MMORPG, btw? How long can I stave off my addiction..)
Time for me to go out and buy some dinner I think.
Oh, wait, the house-hunting.. I managed to look at precisely ONE property today, as most places only have set times you can inspect them.. usually that time is once per week, and a 15 minute window, so I'm gradually building up a diary of places I need to be at, at certain times, over the following two weeks. Unfortunately so far it's at a rate of one per day, which doesn't inspire confidence that two weeks of hunting is going to be enough!
The place I looked at today was in an all-right area, but not brilliant, and was decidedly run-down and crappy. When I told the agent that it needed maintenance, they said that it just HAD BEEN fixed.. by getting a bad coat of paint. Unfortunately fixing the shower or the blinds was out of the question, and a broken shower is a deal-breaker for me. (Plus, it speaks volumes about the landlord, if you pay them $1000/month and they won't spend $30 repairing something.) That probably explains why it's been vacant for a while..
