Right, Nick reminded me of a song last night, and now it's going to drive me mad until I find it.
I suspect it's sung by Martina Topley-Bird (the female singer from Tricky's early albums), but I'm not sure.
The song itself is, again from memory, a fairly gentle trip-hop-esque track, with dreamlike female vocals slowly over it.
The verses mainly follow the pattern of mentioning a number and then what it is, like " is the telephone number of a lonely one; is the serial number of my gun".

I'm failing to find anything via Google searches for lyrics though.

Help me Indie-Wan, you're my only hope!

No, but when I tried, I found out that David Hasselhof is the Antichrist. Who knew.

I merely found out that the singer I mentioned also sung Sandpaper Kisses, the song I liked from Fahrenheit.

Ok, she has done two albums and a couple of singles, and the songs I cannot find lyrics for are these:
Hours away, I only have eyes for you, Outro, Skyscraper

Temporary dead end, will find a way to progress later.

I am a reference hound. Libraries tremble at the sound of my footsteps. No paper escapes.

Cheers!

I'm not 100% sure it is that singer though.. It *sounds* like her, but I'm only hearing the song in my head.. A memory that must be a year or two old.

The lyrics would seem to fit!

Cheers! :D

How did you find it? From memory, or superior google-fu?

Combination of the two. I remembered a song that sorta fited with your lyrics, but that the gun being spoken about was an orbital one - so queue one google search of: "serial number" "orbtal gun" lyrics

the orbital keyword must have done it.. I was entering in loads of searches last night and today, but there are a lot of tracks out there with 'serial number' and 'gun' in them that are wrong. And my (apparently incorrect) memory of a telephone number too wouldn't have helped.

Thanks :)
