Hunter S. Thompson, R.I.P.

Catching up on LJ and news today, I'm sad to hear that Hunter S. Thompson has commited suicide.

While his recent works have portrayed his dispair at the direction the USA, and the world, has been taking, I still had the impression that he was not the sort of guy to give up and end it all like that. His message always seemed to be to never give up, and he seemed to manage to win against the odds.

Someone else suggested that he might have something unpleasant (possibly degenerative?) & terminal, & have chosen to get out now rather than hang around. I could understand him making that decision.
